Evocation

What experiences have you had with evocation? Test out the method below and give us a report!

Are we the same people all the time? Each state we pass through has its own kind of intelligence, its own kind of logic, its own reality tunnel. The quick snapshot of consciousness that we call a state can be thought of as an internal model of an entity, the person who you were then. The energy flow is a metaphoric representation of that entity. When we evoke an energy flow, externalizing it so that we can communicate with it, we refer to it as a State Entity. State entities are rich sources of information about our lives and ready power sources for ritual and personal change.

Magical rituals of evocation range from the deep, mysterious and complex to the extremely simple. The following evocation techniques are about as simple as it gets, and offer you a chance to meet your state entities.

Exercise 3.1 Simple Evocations

Basic Positive Resource Entity
• Banishing - Imagine a circle around you, where you sit. Take a deep breath. As you inhale, let your awareness fill the circle. As you exhale, let your awareness contract to as small a point as you can, in the center of your chest. After five or six cycles of this, take a really, really, really deep breath, filling the circle with your awareness, then exhale forcefully and fully, letting (or imagining) your breath sweep through your personal circle, chasing out anything contrary to your purpose.
• Evocation – Identify something in your life that makes you feel very good in some way. It can be a feeling of confidence, intelligence, satisfaction, arousal, intoxication, approval, or whatever you might describe as a good feeling. Pay very careful attention to HOW it makes you feel, the structure of the feeling. Where does the feeling start? What kind of feeling is it? Where does it go as it develops? Does it continue to move? Is it static? Follow it through to its peak. Then decide "If this feeling had a color, what would it be?" Imagine the color (or colors) in your body in exactly the areas where the feeling is experienced. Then imagine that you are taking the colored shape out of your body and flip it around to face you. Place it on the floor outside your circle and breathe deeply, feeding it breath and energy on each exhalation.
• Keep breathing and feeding it energy until it transforms. It may change shape, size, color, movement, or may take an entirely different form. Once it has transformed, imagine you are communicating with it. Ask it what it wants to be called. Ask it what it can teach you that it has never before revealed. Ask it how you can feel really good more often. Find out whatever you can from it. Thank it for everything.
• You can also ask this entity if it has anything that it would like to do, away from your physical body, off in the external parts of consciousness. If it says that it does, then you can get an agreement of time from the entity… five minutes, an hour, a day, five years, or whatever is appropriate to the task, and the promise from the entity to return to your physical presence at that time. Note down the time of the entity’s return so that you can take notice when it occurs. Ask that your entity will choose to do this only if it is in your benefit and that it will be working on your behalf no matter where it is.
• Closing – Absorb the entity, if it has remained with you, and anything else you may have created in your aura during this operation.
• Repeat Banishing.

Transforming Negative Entities

• Banishing - Imagine a circle around you, where you sit. Take a deep breath. As you inhale, let your awareness fill the circle. As you exhale, let your awareness contract to as small a point as you can, in the center of your chest. After five or six cycles of this, take a really, really, really deep breath, filling the circle with your awareness, then exhale forcefully and fully, letting (or imagining) your breath sweep through your personal circle, chasing out anything contrary to your purpose.
• Evocation – Identify something in your life that makes you feel bad in some way. This technique can be used even with major trauma. It is recommended, however, that you begin with less intense experiences until you develop proficiency. For your first time, think about something in your life that is mildly unpleasant. A situation with family members or co-workers that leaves you feeling annoyed, for instance.
• Again, notice where the feeling flows in your body and mark it out with colors as you did for the good feeling in the “Basic Positive Resource Entity” exercise. Flip it around and place it outside the circle, in front of you, but this time trap it in a geometric shape of some kind, a triangle or square drawn (in your imagination) on the floor.
• Keep breathing and feeding it energy until it transforms. Again, it may change shape, size, color, movement or may take an entirely different form. Once it has transformed, imagine you are communicating with it. Ask it what it wants to be called. Ask it what it wants. Ask if there's a way to accomplish that goal in a more pleasant manner. Negotiate. Find out what it can do for you that it hasn't done before. Find out what you can do for it. Keep breathing to feed it energy. It may transform again, if your negotiation is successful... in which case, flip it back around and draw it back into your body, in its original position. If it doesn't change again, you have a couple of choices: 1) draw it back into yourself, but reversed from its original position, or 2) breathe and draw some energy from it with your inhalation until it has diminished somewhat, then reabsorb it back, flipped around to its original position.
• Repeat Banishing.

The earliest memory that I have of evocation came when I was very young. I was in a car that had just wrecked on a snowy evening, and I observed another car that was about to collide with ours. I sent myself up and into a ball of light above the vehicle and stayed up there as we went spinning around and the car collapsed in on me. My leg was broken but I remember telling myself that I was safe because I was outside of the vehicle and watching my body from above. When the people that I thought were doctors took me out of the vehicle I decided to ride in the ambulance and so I went back into my body. Ever since then I have instinctively done this whenever I found myself in a situation from which there was no immediate escape. The use of magick was a practical result of this skill and I continue to use similar techniques for many other practical situations that are much less violent and scary.I created a miasma spirit who was in the habit of hiding tools from me, and I have begun to talk to him and feed him before I begin my art projects. He seems to be becoming much more cooperative and tractable.

That's a good story. What kind of magical practice do you currently do?

I did the simple evocation, and of course I wanted to evoke the essence of ejaculation. I evoked this state, and transformed it into a mass of off-white light energy ball. I asked what it wanted to do, and it said, experience more joy and spread it self. As I fed it more oxygen, the more joy, bliss, and sexual energy I felt, but it felt a little cleaner and stronger than the orgasmic type pulsations experienced from a regular ejaculation. At the same time, this entity would get larger and would emit flashes like the sun. As it did this, I would feel even greater pleasure in my body. I've never used drugs, but I imagine that the strongest drug couldn't feel this good. The greatest heights of pleasure was when I absorbed it back into my body. It felt like a joy pleasure happy sex bomb. I stored it in my prostate region, and did the banishing procedure several times.

I wouldn't mind walking around like this all day or being able to spread it to others. Is it possible to share this with others?

Good one, mike! It is certainly possible to walk around with your energy flows and to share them with others. In fact, you got pretty close with this post. All you really need do is describe the color, direction, size, shape and so forth to other people and have them imagine it for themselves, in and around their own bodies. Demonstrating it in person also helps. It is not even necessary to tell what the original seed experience was, you can offer the state without specific content. "Meta-Magick: The Book of Atem" is all about sharing states and entities with others, if you'd like to learn more.

Thanks, Phil!

I avoided Meta-Magick: The Book of Atem because the description gave me the idea that it was only for practicing with a group, and I knew that I didn't have anyone to practice with.

Don't believe everything you read in amazon.com reviews! There's plenty for the individual in the book, as well as partner exercises.

Here's something else I played with:

I want to experience more disciple, drive and determination, so I did the banishing ritual and evoked a small ounce of discipline from myself. I see myself as someone who has a little bit of disciple, so this was my representation of what I already possess. As I played with this small circular grain of discipline, I remembered the Sunday school lessons from my youth about faith, and the whole mustard seed metaphor.

I took my mustard seed like discipline, and started to add to it. I added images, feelings, visuals, and stories about people who have willed themselves into extraordinary men. I remember the story of an African Olympic sprinter who ran 3 days to escape his war torn country, I added images from a Kenyan distance runners who ran 15 miles per day without shoes and the image of their bloody feet to my 'discipline-determination-drive entity ball. I also stirred in images from an armless-legless man who summited an icy mountain. I added in stories of spiritual sages who could meditate or fast for days. I added in images and representations from TV characters who are extremely disciplined and determined. Like a witch stirring her cauldron, I added all these ingredients.

I gave it more air, I added sunlight to it, I turned it into a small sun, and then into a burning lava ball. I eventually expanded it to a size that could completely engulf my body, and I wore it over my body like a heavy robe. I started pulling in all of it's energy into my pores, and then into my bones. I also played around with pulling it's energy into my heart and solar plexus. I felt warm, energized, powerful, in control, and ready to run through a wall!

Awesome experience! Plenty of wooo hooo!

I forgot to add that I also collapsed the entity I created in my earlier post into this one, as well as added in some future pacing type of feelings and visual of how it would feel to possess the discipline and drive of all the people I added into this entity.

We started out with set and setting. Candles, Shpongle, comfortable chair, handmade warm blanket (it was in Chicago in the winter after all) the pipe was prepared in advance. 80MG spice with some cannabis to support it in the pipe and keep the DMT from burning. I closed my eyes and breathed deeply for a few moments. My guide, my friend of many years, had volunteered to help me and she waited patiently until I was ready. I took the first hit and held it as long as I could, handing the pipe off to my guide.

It was deep, and I thought, was that it? It was very comforting and full of love, I felt so good. I rememeber just laughing and laughing. Then it hit me, I wasn’t done, not by a long shot. I asked for the pipe again and took another hit, even bigger, clearing most of the material in the bowl. I held that until the room started to come apart.

I knew then that I had enough. I was out of my body in an instant, rushing right through the barriers that had always held me back. I remember sending the signals back to my body to keep breathing, keep my heart beating. I felt the autonomous nature of my body shudder and stumble a bit, but that didn’t last long. At first, I saw the cartoony hallucinations, monkeys banging cymbals, geometric shapes spinning in endless variety and expanse. When I looked closer, I realized that was just another barrier, a projection from my own thoughts. I… pushed on it, for lack of a better word, and it fell away. Then I was gone. I ceased to exist. My once cohesive sense of self was scattered over an area so large, it dwarfed the capacity of human understanding. It was everything and nothing. The entire universe flew though me in an instant. In that instant, I knew everything. I had a perfect clarity of understanding. I knew then that I wouldn’t be able to remember it all, the gray matter wasn’t capable of storing it all, but it didn’t matter. I knew I would never again need to wonder about the WHY of it all. My brain was not constructed to contain it.

There was a moment of fear, a moment of wondering where I was, how I would get back. In that moment all my prior experience came back to me, and two spirit guides appeared to me. I call them the architects, and they had been present for most of my smaller DMT experiences. They comforted me through that period, and then I understood that fear, the meaning of ego interruption, the loss of self and why so many people were scared to do it. I rememered all the other DMT experiences that I had helped with and witnessed, and the challenges I had seen and I understood all of it. I was full to the brim with understanding beyond words. An eternity of knowledge coursed through me. It was the ultimate satisfaction of every curiosity I had ever felt. It was sublime, but incredibly difficult to maintain for long.

I knew the source of every religion, every ideology. I knew how an incomplete understanding of it could be distorted into almost anything. My own understanding is woefully incomplete but I could see that, know why, and release myself of the burden of attempting to understand it. I didn’t need to share it, I didn’t need to explain it.

There was a point of transition, a magnetic field of some sort that interacted with the scattered particles of my now completely shattered sense of self. It was very scary, but my guides were there to remind me that I had nothing to fear. Passing through that barrier was slower on the way back, I felt those particles begin to collect back into a familiar shape. I had a strong sense of a field of white and blue waves or particles. It was warped in a way that defies Euclidian geometry. I felt the overwhelming feeling start to fade and I knew the DMT was breaking down in my body, the exquisite tuning of my brain into the greater cosmic reality was fading, retuning to the shared reality tunnel of this physical world. I remember opening my eyes for a second and the room was hugely distorted. I could hear Terrence McKenna’s voice on the Shpongle track talking about gnomes. I told him that I didn’t see any gnomes but I saw everything else and started laughing, cackling. I could feel the love and support from my friend as she watched, making sure I was OK, it was a beacon that helped me to slip seamlessly back into my body. I knew I was alive, but I also knew why and how in a way I had never understood before. I knew that I was alive by choice, not because I was afraid to die.

The layers of understanding that remain are disjointed and chaotic but coalescing. There are so many things that I was relentlessly hunting that I no longer need to look for. I can’t explain or describe everything I experienced, but I knew in that moment that it was all according to plan and there was no need to try to put it into words this brain could process. What I brought back, I feel like has value beyond anything I have ever experienced as it is. I don’t need to name it, I don’t need to define it, I know beyond knowing that for one moment I knew that it was set up for a reason, a good reason, but something that I have no context to understand, and my physical body lacks the means of fully comprehending it. Some would call it God, I’m reluctant to use that term, but it was certainly a realm of thought beyond the material.

I’ve had an interesting experience with symbols, language, and gestures throughout my life, far before discovering the labels that “Magick” put on these things. Magick gave me the collective words that could help me communicate what I was already doing with others for them to understand. This was treasured and priceless since I quite know what it feels like to not be able to communicate with the world. I moved from Italy when I was seven years old, not knowing much English (although my family did their best to teach me ahead of time). Thrown into American schools not knowing the language gave me a unique perspective on other ways to communicate, the gift of solitude, the collective importance of gestures, and much more. From this point on, gestures, sound, various ways of communication became crucial to me. At 17 I began formalizing it… into small rituals with more structure than when I was 7. I made recitations that functioned to clear the air between people entering my space… since I realized I was an empath early on. This is why this exercise makes me smile.

This exercise formalizes something I already do… which is nice. 🙂

    My activity: taking a walk
The Ritual Frame: ( i struggled with this… making it way too long, academic and hard at first) simplified it to, “I will walk as a clear channel to the divine.”
Gesture: Drawing down of light from Keter to Tipareth… a finger above the head touching white light and pulling it down to Tipareth at the Anahata chakra.
The Closing: a simple adoration of “thank you” and touching the Anahata chakra

I will test it out walking to the bus tomorrow after my morning routine.
